Santa Cruz Area Information

Originally founded as a mission town in 1791, Santa Cruz has since
grown into a thriving small California coastal city of close to 60,000
residents. Prior to Spanish settlement, this area along the northern
part of the Monterey Bay was home to the Ohlone Native Americans.

Today, Santa Cruz is known for its moderate climate, miles of  diverse beaches, easy access to coastal redwood forests and light and high-tech industry. The city draws people from all over the world to study and work at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Tourists and residents come for the natural beauty of the area, the well-maintained hiking trails and open public spaces. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an ocean front amusement park that features The Giant Dipper and the Looff Carousel, both registered on the US National Register of Historic Places.
